- "Who is this year's Golden State?": This was inspired by a sign displayed at the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament game between Notre Dame and George Mason, where a George Mason fan held up a sign reading "George Mason is this year's George Mason". Golden State could very well pull off an upset like last season's overthrowing of Dallas. The team currently hangs onto a half-game lead over Denver for the 8th and final playoff spot in the West.
- Dirk's hurt, but . . . : Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks could also be this year's version of last year's Golden State Warriors team. The Mavericks currently hold the 7th seed in the West and could have the ability to overtake a higher seed in the playoffs.
- The Texas 3? What about New Orleans?: The Boston Celtics recently went 3-1 on a road trip versus 4 Western Conference powers. They swept through the 3 Texas teams (Spurs, Rockets, and Mavericks) but fell to the unheralded New Orleans Hornets. Based on winning percentage, the Hornets are now the #1 team in the West.
- Playoff basketball in Hot-lanta/A-Town?: The Atlanta Hawks hold a 1-game lead over the Nets and a 1 1/2-game over the Pacers for the #8 seed in the East. The Hawks have not made the playoffs since the lockout-shortened 1999 season, which was when Lenny Wilkens was still Head Coach and before the team moved into Philips Arena. The Hawks made a push for the playoffs in 2002-2003 when they offered a refund to season-ticket holders if they did not qualify for postseason play. At 35-47, they failed to make the playoffs.
- The Cavaliers and Wizards could face each other for the 3rd straight postseason. As of today, the teams possess the 4th and 5th seeds in the East.
- Road records: Of the top 8 teams in the West, only 2 have losing records on the road (Utah and Dallas). Of the top 8 teams in the East, only 3 have winning records on the road (Boston, Detroit, and Orlando).
- On the rise: Houston won 22 straight games and went 26-1 from January 19th through March 16th. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has played nearly as well in their own 27-game stretch and has gone 20-7 since January 26th.
