Here are Team Chemistry Rankings to open up the 2014-2015 NBA season. The primary contenders are the Spurs, Clippers, Warriors, Grizzlies, Mavericks, and Thunder from the West; and the Wizards, Cavaliers, Bulls, and Heat from the East.
(Previous rank is in parentheses)
1. San Antonio Spurs (1) - The defending champions have the deepest rotation in the NBA and are the most able to handle in-season injuries.
2. Los Angeles Clippers (4) - Lob City has continuity, a team identity, and in-house growth.
3. Golden State Warriors (5) - They might not have enough to win it all, but they are a steady playoff team for the foreseeable future with the Splash Brothers in town.
4. Memphis Grizzlies (6) - They are getting older, but their team defense and overall chemistry keep them as a threat in the West.
5. Washington Wizards (7) - The young team rallied into the second round of the playoffs last season. They are building a team culture, adding Paul Pierce's playoff experience and emerging in a weak Eastern Conference.
6. Cleveland Cavaliers (20) - A new coach with some new core stars and role players look to dominate the weak East. Cleveland fans hope that the return of The King equates to championship destiny.
7. Chicago Bulls (15) - This could be a make or break year. New faces join a talented team hampered by injuries. Pau Gasol is seeking redemption in Chicago.
8. Miami Heat (2) - They are still a well-balanced team but do have injury problems with key players. Still, a weak conference means that the Heat are still a top team to beat.
9. Dallas Mavericks (8) - The return of Tyson Chandler should help solidify their interior defense. With a good combination of veterans and youth, Dallas may supplant Houston and challenge San Antonio for bragging rights in Texas.
10. Oklahoma City Thunder (3) - Kevin Durant and others are injured. Are Jeremy Lamb, Steven Adams, and others ready to take on more responsibilities to help keep them in contention?
11. Portland Trail Blazers (11) - Rip City is still trying to develop their bench. On paper, this is their best bench since coach Nate McMillan left town.
12. Charlotte Hornets (16) - The edgy but versatile Lance Stephenson joins a rising team in a weak conference. They could be a surprise contender this year.
13. Toronto Raptors (12) - The Raptors finally emerged as a contender with coach Dwane Casey, but they fell a couple points short of defeating the aging Nets last season. They should have another solid season but again find themselves as underdogs behind the star power of the Cavs, Bulls, and even the Wizards.
14. Houston Rockets (13) - They may have underestimated Chandler Parsons's role as a core member of the team. Star power is nice, but what is their team culture becoming?
15. Atlanta Hawks (14) - The Hawks are steady but not dominant. In a best case scenario, they could evolve into the Grizzlies of the East.
16. Phoenix Suns (17) - Phoenix has shown a lot of chemistry with a guard-heavy roster. They can challenge for a playoff berth but may need to consider a trade to bring balance to their rotation.
17. Indiana Pacers (9) - Management is calling on George Hill to emerge in Paul George's absence. However, they need to realize that they have capable post players to help diversify their offense.
18. Denver Nuggets (21) - The Nuggets are a fun young team trapped in a difficult conference. They will be challenging the Suns, Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Kings for a low playoff seed.
19. Brooklyn Nets (10) - The Nets lost some Celtic influence but gained youth in the process. They are still a low seed/borderline contender in the East.
20. Minnesota Timberwolves (18) - The Timberwolves replaced the scoring, rebounding, and outlet passing of Kevin Love with young wing players who can finish fastbreaks. Ricky Rubio will enjoy leading this team.
21. New Orleans Pelicans (22) - The Pelicans have some developing chemistry but must compete out of the gates to stay in the playoff race.
22. New York Knicks (19) - As always, the Knicks have individual talent. This season, they have a unique melting pot of talent; the question is, can they mold this combination into a contender?
23. Detroit Pistons (24) - Stan Van Gundy has developed playoff teams in the past. Despite trying to trade away Josh Smith, Smith could be the biggest beneficiary of his system.
24. Sacramento Kings (23) - The Kings now have more veterans with some developing young talent. Can they finally survive the difficult Western Conference?
25. Milwaukee Bucks (30) - Adding Jabari Parker and some decent veterans could be a recipe for success up north. However, new coach Jason Kidd brings some odd front office drama for them to overcome early on.
26. Boston Celtics (25) - Is Rajon Rondo the heart of this team or is he the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade?
27. Los Angeles Lakers (26) - Steve Nash is out for the year, so all eyes are on Kobe Bryant's health. Carlos Boozer aged in Chicago, but he should benefit from the ball movement of the Princeton offense.
28. Orlando Magic (28) - They have athletic prospects but seem to be getting rid of a veteran presence. It will probably be another tough year near Disney World.
29. Utah Jazz (27) - This young team is still developing an identity. Perhaps a trade in the next couple of years can help.
30. Philadelphia 76ers (29) - Young prospects + injuries = NBA lottery ping pong balls in hopes of a #1 overall draft pick.
