To Trade or Not to Trade? Andy Is Not TRich

This week, the Cleveland Browns stunned the Cleveland fan base with its sudden early season trade of last year's #3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, running back Trent Richardson. With a record of 0-2, the team also announced that last year's other first round draft pick--injured quarterback Brandon Weeden--will be replaced in the starting lineup by third string quarterback Brian Hoyer. The underlying message of these moves was the unpopular yet too frequently heard message in Cleveland sports history: "There's always next year." Closer to Quicken Loans Arena, the Cleveland Indians are further along in their rebuilding efforts, battling for a wild card berth for a one-game playoff in the MLB postseason. Although the team released free agent signings Mark Reynolds and Brett Myers, other key acquisitions over the past few years--such as infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, outfielders Michael Brantley and Michael Bourn, infielder/outfielder Nick Swisher, and pitchers Justin ...

Update: NBA Amnesty Clause

Per the current NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, 14 teams still have the ability to exercise a one-time amnesty clause to terminate a player contract that existed with the team prior to July 1, 2011. They retain this option until July 2016 but can only exercise it during each year's July Moratorium (a period in which teams cannot make trades or sign free agents). Teams still have to pay the balance of the contract, but the amount owed does not count towards the salary cap. As the Detroit Pistons bought out the contract of Rip Hamilton in 2011 rather than using the amnesty clause, the Boston Celtics would likely do the same with the contract of Paul Pierce. Here are additional details of eligible contracts for the amnesty provision. Remaining Amnesty Clause Rights Atlanta Hawks,  Boston Celtics,  Charlotte Bobcats,  Chicago Bulls,  Detroit Pistons,  Los Angeles Lakers,  Memphis Grizzlies,  Miami Heat,  Milwaukee Bucks,  Oklahoma...

#1 Overall Draft Picks to Play for the Cavs

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 marks the 29th NBA Draft Lottery. The Cavaliers have the third best odds to win the #1 overall pick and, barring a trade of some sort, will draft a player between #1 and #6. They also have 3 other draft picks: #19, #31, and #33. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers may be competing to sign former #1 overall pick Greg Oden, in whom they had expressed interest in signing during the 2012-2013 season. Oden last played in 2009-2010 and is fighting off a career's worth of injuries to finally make a comeback. As such, there is the possibility that the Cavs may have 3 #1 overall picks on their roster next season. A recent count of #1 overall draft picks to play in at least 1 game for the Cleveland Cavaliers reveals 7 such players: Austin Carr, Brad Daugherty, Kent Benson, LeBron James, Joe Smith, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kyrie Irving. They have played anywhere from 2 regular season games (Benson) to 635 regular season games (Carr) with the Cavs. They have played anywhere f...
